DRIVEN: Overcoming Complex Illness as a World Class Athlete at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games

Updated: Aug 14

Imagine training for years to be able to qualify as a member of your country’s Olympic team and pursuing your lifelong dream of winning a gold medal.

After thousands of hours of hard work, dedication and pushing past injuries, you suddenly find yourself so fatigued that you can barely function.

During the past few weeks, there were several Olympic athletes competing in Paris who have overcome chronic illness and/or a past health setback which impacted their performance and quality of life.

Sarah Voss - This two time German Olympic gymnast can clearly relate to chasing her dream and facing a complex illness impacting her performance.

Sarah trained and represented her home country last week in the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.

In an August 2, 2024 Instagram post,  Sarah revealed that she had been battling chronic Lyme disease.

From Sarah:

"Feeling tired and sad.

Definitely not the outcome I had hoped for but definitely the most I could do in my situation.

Enduring several weeks/months of crazy pains, fatigue, constant brain fog, neck and joint pains and headaches, which required several weeks of medical treatments in the hospital, was definitely not the ideal preparation towards my second Olympic Games.

Still it’s something that holds me back from performing at my best.

After all being in an Olympic final, calling myself a two-time Olympian and Olympic all around finalist is something I am really proud of! Getting to experience this atmosphere and those brave and strong women is something I will never forget!”

The fact that Sarah was able to compete while treating for chronic Lyme disease is truly remarkable!

Sarah’s determination and perseverance in the face of a debilitating illness cannot be understated. She has a heart of gold and is courageous for sharing her story to millions of people.

Sunisa (Suni Lee)-

You would never know that this 21 year old talented, beautiful American gymnast champion was hospitalized last year for kidney disease.

In an exclusive interview with NBC Sports, she discusses her severe health care challenges during college. She was told that she would never be able to compete again. After going into remission, she had less than six months of training before winning three gold medals during the Paris Olympic Games!

WAY TO GO Suni!

Simone Biles (The GOAT)

Who isn't incredibly proud of American gymnast and Olympic champion Simone's performance last week at the Paris summer games! Her hard work and driven personality earned her three gold medals and one silver

Prior to her extraordinary comeback, Simone was literally stopped in her tracks when she developed a mental block and lost control of her body in the air at the 2020 Tokyo summer Olympic games.

She stopped performing while working on her mental health and educated others on the importance of reaching out for help when struggling with a mental health issue. Simon also has ADHD and has suffered with panic and anxiety attacks in the past.

Noah Lyles

Talk about an Overcomer! Noah represented the USA in the men’s 100 meters final and won the gold medal. Noah shared the following on his Instagram page on August 6th, 2024.

“ I have Asthma, allergies, dyslexia, ADD, anxiety and Depression. But I will tell you that what you have does not define what you can become. Why Not You!”

WHAT MAKES DRIVEN PEOPLE WANT TO FIND THE ANSWERS INSTEAD OF SITTING BACK AND DOING NOTHING?

Their pain point is found in their passion! In this case, athletics and performance.

During my five plus years of torture from my undiagnosed complex illness, there were days that I thought I wanted to give up. I was pushed beyond my limits: physically and emotionally. I cried and prayed frequently. I felt like I was going to have a nervous breakdown but who wouldn't feel that way from being up all night from bizarre muscle and body jerks! I would push myself to go to the YMCA in Tampa Bay and swim laps while I felt one of my legs dragging through the water.

Since I had always been an athletic, active person and knew something was terribly wrong, I refused to give up. I just wanted my life back at any cost.

I didn’t care what I had to do or what it would cost. I wanted a correct diagnosis and proper treatment.

This leads me to a hot topic......

WHAT DO AMERICANS THINK OF OUR HEALTHCARE SYSTEM?

In a recent survey published by a major American publication "The Hill," the majority of people surveyed held an unfavorable view of the our healthcare system.

The poll was conducted last June and consisted of 1,200 U.S adults.

53% have an unfavorable view of the system and 56% of people in the poll say they think patients "very or somewhat often" receive worse care because of their insurance plan.

WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH CONCIERGE HEALTHCARE NAVIGATION SERVICES?

When I hear from a client who is driven, they don't want to be shuffled to multiple practitioners in their insurance network who will spend ten minutes with them.

Active people are proactive. They don't want to end up in the hospital or with a life long chronic condition because they end up with an incorrect or late diagnosis. They love to engage in life through social events, athletic activities, personal relationships, personal development and spiritual growth.

They are willing to leave their insurance network to seek quality, patient centered care from a highly respected, experienced, compassionate physician who is trained on complex illness.

A driven person wants their quality of life back yesterday but understands the healing process will take time and work. They refuse to accept a bottle of pills as a band-aid for their symptoms or a diagnosis that makes no sense.

They also want a knowledgeable Concierge Health Advocate before, during and after their appointments.

But why do you think that is necessary?

"YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW!"

Did you read that last line?

Most people do not possess the knowledge to prepare and ask detailed, critical questions at their practitioner appointments.

When you are alone and have extreme fatigue, brain fog, are sleep deprived or having memory issues, this could lead to a number of negative outcomes, including the potential for being misdiagnosed.

Whether you are an athlete, financial planner, attorney, entrepreneur or business leader, I serve as your trusted health consultant and "voice in the room" who will ensure your concerns are taken seriously.

As an experienced Concierge Health Advocate, my clients know that I will always be transparent with them and look out for their best interests.

Contact me today to schedule your one hour consultation.

Remember, your quality of life is like a gold medal.

There is NO price you can place on it!

Blessings,
